Wow.
Well maybe it’s time to acknowledge that social media is actually a public utility and should be therefore regulated as such in the public interest, and maybe managed by one ultimately responsible body such as Facebook.
Another alternative which is what Google appropriately seemed to spearhead was the open-social movement which was creating a framework upon which people could build social media with integrity, security, and privacy. But the government and the public were too uninformed to choose this option and the tech community did an absolutely horrible job selling it to them.
