The United States of America is an imperialist, police state that doesn’t even pretend to live up to its ideals as spelled out in its Constitution and Declaration of Independence.

And as for the electoral college, that would probably be a great idea! But the problem is that the system doesn’t prevent cheating. As with economic systems, models of democracy, etc., their implementation is soiled by their implementer’s sense of greed and fear, out from which stems feelings of racism, superiority, sexism, classism, and so on.
